Payday Super Is Here. Can Your SMSF Actually Receive the Money?

Payday Super Is Here. Can Your SMSF Actually Receive the Money?

Since 1 July, employers have been paying super every payday instead of every quarter.

For most people, that happens quietly in the background. For SMSF trustees, there's one piece of plumbing that has to be working: your fund's electronic service address.

If it isn't, contributions can't reach your fund, and you may not find out until someone goes looking.

What an ESA Is, and Why It Matters More Now

An electronic service address (ESA) is how your SMSF receives contributions and the data that comes with them from employers through SuperStream.

It's supplied by an SMSF messaging provider, often through your administrator or fund software. Your fund can only have one ESA recorded with the ATO.

Under the old quarterly system, a problem might surface four times a year. Now employers have 7 business days after each payday to get super to your fund.

A broken ESA means a problem every pay cycle.

Some Providers Have Left the Market

A few SMSF messaging providers have changed or closed their services this year:

  • SuperChoice stopped providing SMSF messaging services from 5 May 2026

  • Australia Post ended its service on 30 June 2026

If your fund used either and nothing has been updated, check now.

Some providers offer a contributions-only ESA. That works for employer contributions, but it may not handle rollovers or release authorities. If your fund needs both, make sure your provider covers both.

Employers Can Now Check Your Fund Before They Pay

SuperStream now includes a Member Verification Request, which lets an employer confirm your fund details before sending any money.

That's helpful, as long as the details match. If the ABN, ESA or bank details your employer holds are out of date, payments can be held up and the employer is left chasing you.

What Hasn't Changed for SMSFs

Large funds now have just 3 business days to allocate or return a contribution.

SMSFs don't. Your fund still has 28 days after the end of the month a contribution arrives to allocate it to the right member.

And if your own business contributes to your SMSF, a related employer generally doesn't need to use SuperStream. The new payday timeframes still apply, though.

A Quick Trustee Checklist

  • Confirm your ESA is active and with a current provider

  • Check your fund's details recorded with the ATO are up to date

  • Make sure each member has given their employer the correct fund ABN, ESA and bank details

  • Compare contributions received against payslips for the last few pay cycles

That last one is the easiest way to spot a problem. If a payslip shows super and your fund hasn't received it, raise it with the employer straight away.

Not Sure Your Fund Is Set Up Correctly?

It's a quick check, and much easier to fix now than after months of missing contributions.
